Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo claims that his disallowed goal against Spain on Wednesday evening should have stood.
Portugal hammered their Iberian rivals 4-0 in an international friendly and it could have been worse had Ronaldo’s wonderful effort not been disallowed on 36 minutes because of offside infringement on team-mate Nani’s part (watch it above).
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said that the goal should have been allowed and is quoted by Spanish sports daily Marca as saying, “I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or not, but the best goals in my career have been scored for the Seleccao and disallowed.
“I remember the game at the Estadio do Bessa where I scored a bicycle kick and it was disallowed. The goal was half a metre inside the net. I don’t understand why it wasn’t given. There are no words to explain it. Even a blind man could see it was a goal!”
He added, “The team deserved to be congratulated. We showed we have a good team. There are no miracles, it’s a question of doing simple things, simple process, with which the players feel comfortable. Paulo Bento and the players deserve merit.”
Nani apologised for his role and told RTP, “I touched the ball because it I didn’t think I was offside. I was running forward, the move was very fast. After thinking a while I apologised to Ronaldo; it was a brilliant play and I shouldn’t have spoiled it.”
