Real Madrid gave a true attacking football lesson to Valencia, after resting most of the players that played in the middle of the week in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo sitted on the bench for most of the game, and only stepped in for the final minutes of the match, replacing Higuain. Real Madrid ran over Valencia and smashed the team that is placed in the 3rd league position, with a truly impressive win by 3-6. Gonzalo Higuain (3) , Kaká (2) and Benzema scored the goals of this match.
Earlier this week, Valencia coach Unai Emery, stated that he was more concerned about Real Madrid players that didn't play in the Copa del Rey final and he surely didn’t expect to witness the beating Valencia received by Real Madrid, who returned to Mestalla with a show of class and attacking football. Gonzalo Higuain, Kaká, Karim Benzema and Granero combined to smash a Valencia side that fell victim to its own mistakes and the Merengues showed a tremendous superiority in the whole game. What is even more outstanding is that only two starters from last Wednesday’s Copa del Rey final were in Mourinho's starting choices against Valencia.
Even with a unusual starting eleven picked by Mourinho this season, Real Madrid played almost flawless. Kaká, Granero, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain were very inspired and they forced Valencia defenders to pay, with several good combinations plays. Around the 22th minute, Gonzalo Higuain put in a low pass across the entire box, that Valencia goalkeeper, Guaita, failed to get a hand to. Karim Benzema received it and patiently striked the ball to the left side of the goal. Only eight minutes later, the French player Mathieu, got between Gonzalo Higuain and the ball and blocked the Argentine from advancing on the field, but "Pipita" still managed to get a toe to it and send it to the back of the net making it 0-2. That goal seems to have sank Valencia. A few minutes later, around the 38th minute, Karim Benzema started a run from the midfield, with Kaká leading the way to distract two defenders. Benzema took the ball towards the top of the box, found Gonzalo Higuain on the right side and the Argentine passed it back to Kaká, who flicked it into the net. Just three minutes before the end of the first half, Granero found Kaká with a deep ball and the Brazilian returned the favor by finding Gonzalo Higuain alone in the front of the goal, for an easy tap-in.
Valencia were much more aggressive after the restart, but it didn’t matter anymore. Karim Benzema got a ball to Kaká around the 53th minute. The Brazilian advanced all the way and curled a low pass into the six-yard box to Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentinian scored another goal and completed his hat-trick to put Real Madrid up by an unbelievable 0-5. As fans began to leave the stadium, Valencia pulled one back when former Madridista, Roberto Soldado drove home a low cross by the Brazilian Jonas. But just one minute later, Real Madrid answered right back, showing they were not going to facilitate. Karim Benzema found Kaká open at the top of the box, after over-running a pass. The Brazilian brilliantly nutmegged Stankevicius and curled the ball just beyond Guaita's reach, for the sixth Madrid goal of the afternoon.
With the game all but over, Xabi Alonso took Canales place, Cristiano Ronaldo stepped in for Gonzalo Higuain and Pedro Leon took over for an exhausted Garay. Real Madrid naturally slowed the pace and relaxed, while Valencia looked to cover up the blow out and did just that on the 81th minute, when Mata left a ball for Jonas, who striked it between Iker Casillas and the post. Finally, around the 85th minute, once again Mata lobbed the ball over Raul Albiol and Jordi Alba scored to make it 3-6, which was the final result.
Real Madrid played the final ten minutes with ten men, after Nacho abandoned the pitch with muscle trouble, but the game drew to a end with no further incidents. Real Madrid can now begin preparing the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals, scheduled for Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu, against the Spanish rival Barcelona. This will be the 3rd "El Clasico" in a 10 days period, in what is called by many as the "El Clasico World Series".
