The Spanish capital derby went down this Saturday night in the Santiago Bernabéu and just like it happened last season, it was Atletico Madrid who got to pull off a surprise on Real Madrid. The Colchoneros stole these precious 3 points after beating the Merengues by 1-2 and not even Cristiano Ronaldo's return to action proved to be enough to produce a different outcome for the European champions...

For a second straight time in La Liga, Atletico Madrid has beaten Real Madrid in their own home ground, after edging out their city rivals by 1-2 in an intense derby played last night at the Santiago Bernabéu. The visitors were the first team to score in the first half and they've done it through yet another corner-kick. The Merengues' reaction arrived still before the half-time break, when Cristiano Ronaldo managed to draw a penalty-kick which he himself would make sure to bury instants later. However, Atletico found a way to regain the lead later in the second half, thanks to a clinical finish by Arda Turán, who had came in as a substitute just a few minutes before. With tonight's loss, Real Madrid are now 6 points behind the league leaders Barcelona, with only 3 fixtures completed in La Liga. All eyes are now in the opening round of the UEFA Champions League next week, with a Real Madrid vs Basel match-up taking place right this Tuesday...

A couple weeks ago, when Real Madrid came out of the Anoeta with a harsh 4-2 loss against Real Sociedad, Ancelotti assumed that several things needed to change in the Merengues' realm and that he would make sure that we would all be seeing those diferences right in the next game. However and looking at what happened this Saturday night at the Santiago Bernabéu, the truth is that it seemed like we were watching an old movie with a very predictable outcome...

Real Madrid stepped on to the pitch without many surprises in their starting eleven, lining up with Iker Casillas in goal, Fábio Coentrão on the left, Arbeloa on the right (since Carvajal is currently injured) and Sergio Ramos pairing up with Pepe in the center. The midfield areas were filled in by Bayern Munich's former midfielder, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and James Rodríguez, while the Merengues attack was handed to Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo on the wings, with Karim Benzema taking his usual centre forward role.

All it took for Atletico Madrid to draw the first blood in the Bernabéu was roughly 10 minutes though. The Spanish reigning champions had yet another demonstration on why they are undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in the world when it comes to score from set-pieces plays and they didn't seem to have sweated much when they successfully caught several Real Madrid players sleeping in this derby's opening goal. Koke was the man in charge of taking the corner-kick on the left attacking side of the Colchoneros but it was Tiago in the near post, who ended up anticipating his marker Benzema and heading the ball past an helpless Iker Casillas. Bad start for Carlo Ancelotti's men, who had just been forced to go through some ghosts of their past...

The hosts kept their cool though and they were clearly the side who dominated and created the best chances throughout those first 45 minutes. When Cristiano Ronaldo was fouled inside Atletico Madrid's box around the 25th minute of the first half, the Merengues were certainly happy to see their comeback efforts leading up to such a golden opportunity to equalize the derby. The former Manchester United player didn't hesitate to take the responsibility of converting the chance from the 12-yards mark and would tie things up at 1-1 by scoring his first penalty-kick of the season.

When the two sides walked off the pitch at half-time, Real Madrid clearly had the momentum on their side and few would have predicted that they were about to produce such a poor second-half, as they unfortunately did. If it's safe to say that the changes brought in by Ancelotti during the second period didn't exactly help much the Merengues improving their game, the exact opposite about Atletico Madrid is also true.

The Colchoneros stepped up their game after seeing Griezman and Arda Turán coming in, and it would be precisely the Turkish number 10 striking the final blow in the Bernabéu, in a period of the game where we had already less than 15 minutes left to be played. The former Real Madrid player (2004-2006) Juanfran, found some space to support his team's attack on the right wing, sent in a low cross into the Merengues' box and saw Arda Turán finishing it off with a classy first-touch finish that at such distance from the goal, basically gave Iker Casillas no chance at all to still reach to the ball. The final result had just been set and for the first time in history, Atletico Madrid wraps up a second consecutive win at the Bernabéu in league games.
