Deportivo visited the Bernabéu tonight with high hopes of causing a surprise in the Spanish League, but Real Madrid reacted well to the early goal conceded around the first quart of an hour and earned a 5-1 victory at the end. The Coruña side got the first lead of the game, but then clearly failed to hold Real Madrid's response, as they saw José Mourinho's men taking over things and scoring a total of 5 goals. One of the most important players in that reaction was precisely Cristiano Ronaldo, as he found the path to goal in 3 different ocasions, two of those from the penalty spot. Pepe and Angel di María scored the remaining two goals in a game where Deportivo barely managed to create problems to Real Madrid's goalkeeper, Iker Casillas.

The Merengues didn't start the game with the right foot and ended up conceding the first goal of the night, near the 15th minute of the first half. Deportivo came up with a good and fast combination of passes, on which Bruno Gama assisted Riki as the Spanish forward prepared to enter Real Madrid's penalty area. Raphael Varane, who replaced Sergio Ramos in the center of defense, hesitated when he attempted to stop the Deportivo's forward and Riki easily got past him on his way to beat Iker Casillas and put his side one goal up at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The reaction came roughly 8 minutes later, from an individual play by Angel Di María, who dribbled Deportivo's defender Manuel Pablo, just before getting tackled from behind, precisely in the moment when he was entering the penalty area. The referee pointed to the spot and Cristiano Ronaldo easily scored the equalizer, that would mark the beginning of the "remontada".
Real Madrid kept dominating the game, even though they weren't playing at their best. Close to the 38th minute of the first half, Modric was left with plenty of time and space to decide what to do with the ball near Deportivo's area and that turned out to be fatal for the Coruña side. The Croatian midfielder made a low pass to exploit a big gap in Deportivo's defense line, that would met Angel Di María, as the Argentinian sprinted from behind. With only the goalkeeper in front of him, Di María striked the ball with his left-foot, but saw it being deflected to the right post. The ball luckily rebounded to his own head and an easy touch was enough to put Real Madrid on the lead for the first time on the night.
There was still time for a third goal before half-time and it was Cristiano Ronaldo who once again showed up, this time scoring from a header. The Portuguese forward got his second of the night after seizing an opportunity that came up from a rebound of a Sergio Ramos shot. The Spanish defender gave his place on the center of defense to Varane, but took Arbeloa's right-back position, which allowed the Merengues to also create danger from his runs down the right wing.
Whatever strategy Deportivo had prepared to this game, it may have fallen immediatly after Real Madrid got the equalizer. The second-half didn't show anything new and the Merengues played as they wanted, slowing down the pace of the game whenever they felt the need for it. Without pushing forward insistently, José Mourinho's men were still able to extend the lead near the 66th minute of the game. Xabi Alonso took a free-kick on the left attacking side and made a well timed cross to Pepe, assisting the Portuguese for a good header and his first goal of the season for Real Madrid.
The game wouldn't end without Cristiano Ronaldo completing his hat-trick though. Kaká's attempt of crossing the ball into Deportivo's area was denied by Evaldo's right arm and the referee had no problems in pointing to the penalty mark for the 2nd time in the same game. As usual, Cristiano Ronaldo was the man called to assume the responsability and he didn't miss. The Portuguese star scored his 9th goal of the season for Real Madrid, precisely his 6th in La Liga, allowing him to tie with Messi at the 2nd place and to be just one goal behind Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao. Next weekend we have the first La Liga clasico of this campaign and Real Madrid will have a great opportunity to close the current 8 points gap to Barcelona.
