04.05.2016 » Real Madrid 1-0 Man City. The ticket to the Champions League final

Gareth Bale scores the winner in Real Madrid 1-0 Manchester City

Real Madrid advanced to the UEFA Champions League final after beating Manchester City 1-0 at the Bernabéu this Wednesday night. The only goal of this tie came off a cross from Gareth Bale that got deflected on Fernando's foot. In the final, Real Madrid will now meet their neighbours Atletico, just like it happened in 2014...

Real Madrid have earned their much-wanted ticket to the UEFA Champions League final, following tonight's crucial 1-0 win against Manchester City. In a game where neither of the teams really performed at their best, Real Madrid were still able to display their superiority against Manuel Pellegrini's men and secured their win with an own goal from Fernando, who was unfortunate enough to deflect a Gareth Bale cross in the 20th minute of the first half. Cristiano Ronaldo finally made his return from injury and played the whole game, but the truth is that he was also a bit far from the level we were already seeing from him in the past few months. Now, the Merengues will have another chance to become European champions next May 28 in Milan, in a final where they will go face to face with their city rivals, Atletico Madrid.

All Cristiano Ronaldo actions vs Manchester City:

And there we have it. Another Champions League final and another Madrid derby. All roads now lead to Milan, the stage of the final, on May 28.

It's truly an amazing achievement considering where Madrid stood only a few months ago, when all this looked like a wasted season. Zinedine Zidane has achieved a spot in the Champions League final in his first season as coach, rescuing the team from what looked like sure disaster a few months ago.

This matchup itself, the semi-final second leg vs Manchester City, was far from perfect, however. Real Madrid squeaked by 1-0, but it was largely due to the English side's inability to do anything of note in front of goal. Man City looked incredibly timid and nervous, as if the occasion was too big for them and Madrid, on the other hand, were cautious knowing that one goal would take them through...

And that goal would come in the first half, courtesy of Gareth Bale and a deflection off Fernando. After a nice through ball from Carvajal, Bale's attempted center hit the Brazilian and the ball flew into the top corner of the net, leaving Joe Hart without any realistic chance to get to the ball.

There were other chances as well. Luka Modric found himself free in the box later in the second half, but he couldn't beat an onrushing Joe Hart. Gareth Bale also saw his second-half header go off the underside of the crossbar. But even with those missed opportunities, Real Madrid never looked like conceding in this game against Manchester City. But there were still questions... Zidane opted to bring on James midway through the second, taking out Isco, who had a fantastic game in the midfield. It was a puzzling substitution and James struggled to make any impact on the game.

In a sense, however, the game was anticlimactic and as the seconds ticked away, Real Madrid were able to hold on for the victory.

There are three games left in the season. Three finals. Two to decide the league and a final one for the Undecima.
