It was a slow debut game that we've all witnessed at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia this Saturday morning, as Real Madrid and AS Roma clashed for the International Champions Cup, in a pre-season friendly that ended with the two sides settling for a 0-0 draw after the 90 minutes of regular time. Roma then proved to be the most composed side in the penalty shootout that came after, beating the Merengues by a 7-6 scoreline. Just like several of his teammates, Cristiano Ronaldo only played the first 45 minutes and didn't have many chances to showoff all his talent on the pitch. Real Madrid will now face Manchester City next Friday morning (July 24), on the exact same stadium where they've played today.

There's a new era being forged in the Madrid reign and the first chapter just started earlier today in Australia. Rafael Benítez had his first game as a coach in Madrid's bench and as expected, he ended up rotating most of his players throughout the game.
The Merengues stepped onto the pitch with Keylor Navas in the goal, Marcelo and Carvajal on the wings, while Sergio Ramos and Varane took over as centre backs. Madrid's midfield roles were handed to Illarramendi, Modric and the youngster Odegaard, who were tasked to support the attacking cast trio formed by Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jesé Rodríguez.
As expected, neither of the teams managed to play a very good level of football in this first test of the season and the first half definitely lacked intensity and goalscoring opportunities. Nevertheless, it would be Roma getting closer to break the deadlock when they hit the woodwork still inside the first 10 minutes of the game. That would also turn out to be the best scoring chance in the whole game, as both teams proved out to be a bit rusty in their attacking duties.
In an attempt to change things and also grant most of his new pupils some playing time, Benítez brought in a lot of changes for the second half. Ronaldo, Modric, Ramos, Marcelo, Illarramendi, Varane and Odegaard left the pitch and were replaced by Pepe, Isco, Nacho, Lucas Silva, Kroos, Benzema and Arbeloa. All these changes turned out to produce a positive effect on Madrid and the team actually seemed to improve a bit their attacking dynamics, chemistry and overall passing.
The "loan returnees" Denis Cheryshev and Lucas Vázquez would come in later in the half, while the new signing Danilo replaced Carvajal around the 70th minute. The Merengues ended up having more possession than Roma, but that didn't allow them to create any really dangerous plays in order to threaten to score. The 0-0 score dragged on right until the final whistle, and the game immediately moved on to a penalty shootout decision. Roma would then prevail and beat Real Madrid by 7-6, with Lucas Vázquez missing the only penalty-kick of the shootout.
